I have always loved art and being a collector for many years has instilled a lasting desire for me to create works of my own. With the exception of photography for which I’ve won several awards, the countless art classes that I have taken over the years have never brought me closer to my goal of being an artist. On February 20, 2024 that all changed. I was sitting by the fire at a Chicago neighborhood restaurant when I decided to put down my phone and pick up the marker and paper that I kept with me for jotting notes and simply began to draw. At the end of the evening I thought: well these are better than the cartoon cats, dogs and horses that I’ve drawn over the years!
The following day I was compelled to pick up good drawing paper and india ink pens from the local art store and have been drawing my abstract pieces daily ever since, letting the ideas just flow out of my head. After showing some of these early pieces to a friend, she asked “What do you call this type of art?” For lack of a better description I replied, “They’re doodles”. Perhaps she expected a more eloquent response when she uttered “Doodles? I can barely draw a stick man!” As an homage to this early moment in my late artistic journey and a dear friend that inspired me to continue I put at least one stick figure in every drawing.
My work is the culmination of a lifetime of personal inspiration and curiosity. After decades of searching for my voice, I found it when I wasn’t looking and in a place I would have never expected.
